Join Bishop Paul on his Prayer Walk

This year, Bishop Paul's annual Prayer Walk will be around Wearmouth Deanery from Thursday 18 May to Sunday 21 May 2023. He would love you to join him for sections of the journey and you can find details of the route below. If you do join them and take any photos, please do send them to the Communications Team communications@durham.anglican.org.   

 

Thursday 18 May (Day 1)

  • 9 for 9.15am start. Breakfast at Bede's Bakehouse

  • 10.15am National Glass Centre. 

  • 11.15am. Walk from National Glass Centre along the riverside to Roker beach. Then walk through Roker Park to St. Andrew's Church. 

  • 12.30pm Midday prayer at St. Andrew's Church

  • 1.30pm Lunch and Q&A with local residents and community leaders

  • 7pm Deanery Ascension and Confirmation Service at St Peter’s Monkwearmouth.

 

 

Friday 19 May (Day 2)

  • 9am. Service at Benedict Biscop School

  • 11am. Walk from school through Doxford Park, stopping at the Covid memorial and then onto St. Matthew's. 

  • 12:30pm Lunch and Q&A at St Mathew’s church café.

  • 1:30pm Walk to Venerable Bede Academy. 

  • 3:00pm Walk to mining and war monuments and old pump house ending on the beach with prayers for those who work at sea / shipping industry.

 

Saturday 20 May (Day 3)

  • 10am start from St. Chad's. 13-mile walk, stopping briefly at: Farringdon Primary School, Archer's Court, Farringdon Community Centre and Academy, East Herrington Primary Academy, Scout Hut, Hasting Hill, Greenside Court, ATC 111 (Sunderland) Squadron, St. Oswald, Grindon Infants, Aldate Court, Pennywell Industrial Estate, St. Thomas, Christ's College, Academy 360, Village Care Home, South Hylton Primary, Tansy Centre, Sunderland Training and Education Farm, Pennywell Approved Premises, Broadway Junior School, Springwell Health Centre, St. Mary and St. Peter's Church, Link School, Sandhill View Academy and Plains Farm Academy. 

 

Sunday 21 May (Day 4)

  • Bishop Paul to preach at St. Luke's. 

  • Chris Knights, Bishop's Chaplain, to preach at St. Gabriel's. 

  • Following these services, a walk will take place from St. Luke's to the Pallion Secret Garden. 

  • 1pm. Lunch at St. Luke's Neighbourhooud Centre. Clergy and parishoners from across the deanery will be invited to join and hear from the party about the highlights of their week.
