"Since my appointment as Bishop of Jarrow in 2019, I have discovered that this land of the Northern Saints, with her people of proud industrial heritage, is self-evidently a place of welcome. With outstretched wings, the Angel of the North welcomes me home each day to Gateshead where I live.
Coming from the Valleys of South Wales, from family rooted and shaped by the mines, there is so much here that speaks to me and inspires me. From my earliest days, long before I came to faith in Jesus Christ, I was taught the importance of giving back to your community, getting involved and looking out for those who were struggling.
Our Diocese of Durham vision to ‘Bless our communities in Jesus’ name for the transformation of us all’ speaks to my heart and I seek to work and be witness to that vision in all that I am and all that I do as Bishop of Jarrow.
Like so many people in our Diocese and the wider North East, my life and calling has been shaped by the Covid pandemic in ways I could never have imagined.
During this extraordinary time, I have witnessed the resilience and courage of the people I have met, on Zoom and in person, in local and church communities young and old, across this diverse area. So, I look to the future with hope, hope rooted in the strength of character of the people I live and work amongst and in the strength of God’s love who in Jesus Christ always acts to bring new life to us, even in the hardest of days.
Jesus Christ’s resurrection means that new life and new hope are always possible for every person and every community, and I have experienced this in my own life and in communities I have served in.
I look forward to being part of what is sparking into new life as we journey from the darkest days of the pandemic with hope."
