New Canon Missioner at Durham Cathedral

The Acting Bishop of Durham and Durham Cathedral are delighted to announce the appointment of the Revd Canon Jane Maycock as the new Canon Missioner and Residentiary Canon at Durham Cathedral.

Jane, who is currently Acting Director of Ministry Development and Interim Diocesan Director of Ordinands in the Diocese of Carlisle, has recently been appointed to the newly created Cathedral role.

The Canon Missioner is a new appointment designed to take forward the Cathedral’s Proclamation strand within Vision 2033.  The Canon Missioner will develop the Cathedral’s ministry of evangelism, discipleship and social justice and work with Prof Simon Oliver as Co-Director of the Durham Cathedral Institute, hosting leading speakers on key issues facing the world today.

In almost 34 years of ordained ministry, Jayne has served in local church ministry and ministered as a theological lecturer, chaplain and DDO.  A published author, she has recently completed her doctoral thesis at the University of Durham in the area of literature, theology and contemporary culture.

Welcoming the appointment, the Right Reverend Sarah Clark, Bishop of Jarrow and Acting Bishop of Durham, said: “I enjoyed meeting with Jane and I look forward to welcoming her to the Diocese of Durham. The Canon Missioner is a fresh, innovative role and Jane brings the creative imagination, experience and faith in God that promises much for the future.”

Philip Plyming, Dean of Durham, added: “I am delighted to have Jane joining the team as Canon Missioner and Residentiary Canon.  Her significant leadership experience, theological ability and heart for reaching out with God’s love means she will bring so much to this new role.  We know she is looking forward to joining our community of prayer and worship and we look forward to welcoming her as we work together towards Vision 2033 and our priorities of Encountering God: Pilgrimage, Prayer and Proclamation.”

Jane Maycock commented: “I am thrilled to have been appointed as the new Canon Missioner and Residentiary Canon at Durham Cathedral. It is an exciting time to be joining the team as we develop the Proclamation strand of Vision 2033, and I’m very much looking forward to being part of the Cathedral community.”

Simon Oliver, Van Mildert Professor in the Department of Theology and Religion and Co-Director of the Durham Cathedral Institute, said: “I am delighted that Jane is joining us at Durham. She comes with considerable theological expertise and extensive ministerial experience. Jane’s long-standing interest in Christian engagement with contemporary culture will be of enormous benefit to the Durham Cathedral Institute as we seek to develop its work across the region.”

Jane is due to take up her new role after Easter.
