Sarah Elizabeth Clark was consecrated Bishop of Jarrow on 27 February 2019. As a Suffragan Bishop, she is called to work alongside the Bishop of Durham across the whole Diocese and act on his behalf as needed.
She has particular responsibilities:
- The Sponsoring Bishop with responsibility for those who are exploring vocations, ordained and lay, and also for those who are serving their curacy within Durham Diocese
- The leadership of the Diocesan Priority of Challenging Poverty
- As the Episcopal lead for the Communities of Hope
- As the Chair of the national Ministry Experience Scheme
Ordained ministry
- Trained for ordained ministry at St John's College, Nottingham
- Studied an MA in theology and graduated in 1997
- She was made a deacon in 1998 and ordained priest in 1999 at St Mark's, Woodthorpe
- After a curacy in Porcester, Nottingham, she was the Rector of Carlton-in-Lindrick from 2002 until 2009
- She was the Area Dean of Worksop from 2006 until 2009 and also the Team Rector at Clifton, Nottingham, until her appointment as Archdeacon of Nottingham from 2014
- She was Dean of Women’s Ministry and Hon Canon of Southwell Minster 2010-2014
Other careers and interests
- Bishop Sarah’s first career was as a civil servant, working in the Department of Employment from 1987 to 1995. She progressed through their graduate training programme in the West Midlands where she went on to hold a range of management roles
- She completed a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from Keele University in 1994
- She also studied Sports Science and History at Loughborough University of Technology, graduating in 1986
- She’s a keen sports fan, especially football and rugby, supporting Wales of course!
- Lord of the Rings is one of her favourite films and she’s even seen some of the film sites in New Zealand while visiting friends there
