What is The Pulse?

The Pulse is a termly gathering for young people (school years 7-13) organised through Durham Diocese.

Take a look at the image gallery for a taste of what we get up to!

What happens at The Pulse?

Each event is different; it is usually based in Durham Cathedral but not always. The purpose is for youth groups to come together in larger numbers than their weekly meetings, to have fun, to explore faith in a variety of different ways and to worship God together.

During the pandemic, we moved online, but were physically meeting again now. Past events and activities have included:

  • a pilgrimage across the sands to Holy Island
  • magician and comedian John Archer
  • the worlds largest escape room
  • a gospel choir
  • big games
  • prayer spaces
  • testimony
  • Archdeaconry Youth Games at Brancepeth Castle
  • a juggler
  • youth worship groups from around the diocese
  • a Taize service
  • Gladiator challenges with Ace (Warren Furman)
  • a party with DJ Sean Pickering in the Monks Garden at the Cathedral

The most recent event was held on Sunday 22 October when over 100 young people from 20 different churches gathered to worship together at Durham Cathedral. They took part in the world's largest escape room and heard Bishop Paul's faith story. Find out more

The next Pulse youth event will be held on Saturday 13 July 2024 - a pilgrimage to Holy Island.

The pilgrimage will involve walking the 3 miles across the sand, a limited amount of free time on the island, eating a simple meal together in the village hall and finishing with a short service at St Mary's Church.

The cost is £10 per person and 2 coaches will be picking people up across the Diocese, starting from 9.30am approx (earliest pick-up) and returning for 8pm approx (latest drop-off).

In 2022, one coach started in Newton Aycliffe with a pick-up at Cuthbert House (A167/A1). The other coach started in Hartlepool with pick-ups in East Durham and Gateshead (A19/A1231). Routes can be adjusted according to location of youth groups but there will only be a very limited number of pick-up points. We are aware that the Durham Miners’ Gala is happening the same day!

Spaces are limited so early booking is highly recommended by emailing me andy.harris@durham.anglican.org  I don’t need an exact number or payment at this point, but I need an approximate number of seats you expect to need. I also don’t need to know names of young people. The pilgrimage is for young people (and their youth leaders) so please don’t add ‘extra’ adults to your group!!  The booking forms (and any payments) are to be returned to youth leaders. Risk assessment will be sent out on booking, and exact pick-up times and locations will be confirmed at least 3 weeks before the event.

Full details on flyer.

Coach seating availability.

The event is for young people in school years 7 and above. However, where there are a few year 6s as part of an older youth group, it is possible for them to come too. Groups must be supervised by adult leaders (with current and relevant DBS). If young people have mobility issues, please contact me to discuss what arrangements might be possible.
